Zao-Awake?
With over 15 years of trudging out records, numerous line up changes, touring, and even a change in spiritual direction, Zao has still managed to stay at the top of their game and uphold their title as one of the founding fathers of metalcore. Throughout the years, their sound has stayed coherent, fresh, as well as progressive and mature. Any band that can make it to 10 album releases must be doing something right!
AWAKE?, the band’s most recent compilation of tunes, brings forth the original beautiful, sludgy sounding intensity that I haven’t seen from Zao since THE FUNERAL OF GOD, in mid 2004. Co-produced by As I Lay Dying’s Tim Lambesis, AWAKE? Combines elements of the original metalcore sound with the essential ingenuities that die hard Zao fans search for. I whole heartedly think Zao could be the U2 of the metalcore scene with their longevity and never failing legion of fans…minus the U2 member’s bad haircuts though.
