The Wedding - The Sound the Steel EP
1. Receive
2. Return
3. Renew
4. Reveal
5. Redeem
The Wedding have successfully completed the transition to a southern rock band. Which is really freakin’ weird, considering their self-titled Rambler Records debut (of which I am a proud owner) sounded more along the lines of Fall Out Boy or Relient K. But now I’m hearing heavy riffs and loud vocals that could have fit just as easily on Temptation Come My Way (The Showdown) or II (Maylene & the Sons of Disaster). I mean, they’re certainly no metal band. There’s still pop sensibilities left on tracks like the piano-laced “Renew” and the piano-based balled “Redeem,” but “Return” and “Reveal” showcase powerful breakdowns and passionate gang vocals and dirty punk rock fashion that wasn’t even imaginable on The Wedding’s first record. It’s an intense sound, and after the half & half that was Polarity, it’s good to see the band settling into one area and doing it well. Now all I have to do is make it back out to one of their shows, and I may be recovered as a full-on fan again.
9/10

Southern rock? Nah. It’s a pop-punk album that has been blessed with influences from hardcore and southern swagger.
And don’t confuse southern-influenced hardcore/metal like The Showdown and Maylene for “southern rock”. Save that for The Allman Brothers or Skynyrd.
