Am I the only one who is incredibly disappointed when a band comes out with an album featuring tracks from their EP? As is the case with Sing it Loud’s Come Around, it’s almost like the album has eight tracks instead of 11. And eight tracks is not very satisfying. Thankfully though, what is here is a mouth watering collection of sweet and syrupy pop-punk, entirely unsubstantial yet worth the time.
Probably the best way to enjoy Sing it Loud is to go into Come Around expecting the album to be solid, but unoriginal and lacking innovation. With this mindset, Come Around is a decent album. Take a synth, lots of energy, and a colorful MySpace and you’ve got the recipe for success right? Epitaph Records must think so.
But I must admit that I’m a sucker for pop-punk. Sometimes I even search MySpace just to find new pop-punk bands to listen to. Maybe it’s the bright colors on their websites, or the feeling that I get when I visit them that I too can become famous if they can. Or maybe it’s because pop-punk is so ridiculously catchy. It stays with me all day long. It keeps me up at night. Honestly I can’t get enough.
So having heard enough pop-punk to populate an iTunes library spanning at least 6.7 days, I can easily recognize when I hear a band that’s nothing special. Sing it Loud isn’t this band, but they’re close. There’s enough potential on Come Around to keep me interested. The hooks are catchy, and guest appearances by All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth and Motion City Soundtrack’s Justin Pierre are more than welcome. From the sugary ballad that’s “Over You,” to the earnest energy of “Don’t Save Me,” Sing it Loud’s debut is worth a listen. The words “amazing” and “awesome” aren’t yet synonymous with Sing it Loud, but I think some day they can be. 6.5/10
