Lower Definition- The Greatest of All Lost Arts

Maybe I can coin the phrase “seductive screamo”…? It’s a long shot, but it would make sense seeing as that’s exactly how I’d describe Lower Definition’s The Greatest of all Lost Art.

Within this album you get the feeling that each and every song is directed towards you personally. A large chunk of this has to do with vocalist Matt Geist’s personable voice and sensual tendencies.  Along side such simplistic sensuality, there’s a thick layer of low and highs (screams) aligned with everything in between. How this can work and be so cohesive? I’m not sure, but trust me when I say it does.

Taking a new lease on the post hardcore scene, they became great contenders for bands with heavier music and a lighter mainstream vibe as well. The Greatest of All Lost Arts definitely has the potential to become the soundtrack to a teenage love story as well as a go to album for a ‘pick me up.’ Lower Definition’s versatility is welcoming for fans of post hardcore, metalcore, and even indie, with their splash of Circa Survive influence.

It probably doesn’t hurt that they have a song graced with guest vocals from Jonny Craig (currently of Emarosa, formerly of Dance Gavin Dance.) This appearance can be seen on my favorite song off the album; track 6, Pueblo Cicada.

In all, this is a great release for Lower Definition. It’s a captivating debut release from San Diego bread boys with big city musical chops. Each song is beautifully written and seemingly well thought out, with a natural groove to it. This album will have a very long run on my ipod that’s for sure!

Standouts: The Ventriloquist, Pueblo Cicada, Namaskar
