Lovers of well-written, non-derivative music are, in today’s music scene, left wanting more often than not. In a world full of over-done pop choruses and the continuous rehashing of all that’s been done before, it is extremely easy for one to forget what made them fall in love with music to begin with. However, every once in a while, one will stumble across an unexpected gem of an artist that brings back the passion and love for unadulterated art that was once held so dear.
This is exactly how I felt three days ago when I discovered the music of David Condos for the first time. As the opening measures of the song “Like Wolves” flowed out of my speakers through the band’s myspace player, I was immediately overcome with an urge to own something that this band had created. It was at that moment when I noticed that the band was giving away their new EP, Like Wolves, away for free. I wasted no time in getting over to the band’s website to download this unexpected surprise. I had a couple problems, and wasn’t able to download it as soon as I would’ve liked (Thanks David for hooking me up with the replacement!), but once I had synced it to my iPod and begun listening, I realized that the technical difficulties were well worth the quality of the music.
As I already stated, the opening track “Like Wolves” is excellent. It kicks off with an extremely engaging cello line, before David’s unique voice comes in. I really don’t know any way to describe this man’s vocals other than to say I love them. The instrumentation in this song is outstanding (a quality prevalent through the whole EP). The members of David Condos boast a wurlitzer, cello, glockenspiel, and an organ. Furthermore, this song is very catchy, without sounding like a product of a commercial-oriented group of musicians. Just listen to the line “Howl like wolves… how how how they like you…” and you’ll see what I mean.
I could go on with excellent things to say about the last two songs on this EP, but I’ll let you discover the rest of these songs for yourself. I want you to be able to listen to them and formulate your own opinions not based on something I may or may not have said. Listening to this EP is an experience that you should not deprive yourself of. I will say though, that David Condos is what true indie music should be. This is one of those bands that desperately deserves to be big, but unfortunately probably won’t be. Forgive my rusty review skills and go DOWNLOAD THIS EXCELLENT PROJECT RIGHT NOW! Make sure to tell a friend while you’re at it. This will definitely be one of my favorite EPs of 2008, and I applaud you members of David Condos for reviving my faith in modern music. As for me, I’m off to go purchase David Condos’ previous release.
Music/Instrumentation: 10/10. Seriously. It’s That good.
Lyrics: 6/10. They’re not bad, but they can be hard to decipher. However, they do an excellent job at avoiding cliches, and that’s always a good way to score points with me.
Artwork: 10/10.
Final Score: 8.6/10
