Count your Blessings- Like Gum In Your Hair
Very pleasantly pop punk friendly 5 piece, Count Your Blessings, initially ring into my head as the frontrunners to be the new MTV band of choice. CYB approach sneakily with their brand of pop punk by adding segments of double pedal usage to their songs in addition to elegantly twined riffs and strong vocals comparable to the likes of Mayday Parade or All Time Low.
Their album, Like Gum In Your Hair, is definitely stacked high with catchy, mature (soon to be) hits. The sound throughout the album is fairly consistent from start to finish, with an ever so unexpected breakdown or two. This sweet surprise can be found in the last track off of their album, “Sucker for Sweet girls.” This song is definitely a good representation of their mature side lyrically and musically. I would love to see the band bring together more songs with the intensity put into this track. It’s a beautiful exposé of vocalist Judson Mattingly’s vocal stamina, as well as drummer Kenny Smith’s ability to create a much heaver sound.
If this band can take their tunes to the heights that New Found Glory and Blink-182 have, may be the defining question here. Like their pop punk forefathers, I must admit that Count Your Blessings have gathered together some songs written with wit and youth. Though they will face the battle of “not being just another pop punk band,” CYB have a fighting chance and should give it all they’ve got!
