When a friend of mine first brought A Skylit Drive to my attention, I was actually a bit fearful they’d fall into an array of bands joining together to replicate a “been there, done that” sound. A Skylit Drive’s debut full length, “Wires…and the Concept of Breathing,” is an entirely different journey.
ASD’s 2007 EP, “She Watched the Sky,” was a pretty superb introduction for the band, establishing them as a definite force to be reckon with; but “Wires…” makes for an entirely different vibe this time around. I personally appreciate the risks ASD took with this record, giving it layers as oppose to making it something that you can listen to 20 times and not learn anything new from. Genre wise, “Wires…” is an eclectic mix of past hardcore brutality with indie tendencies. On the track “My Disease”, I actually found myself thinking, “These guys are really channeling Circa Survice! “ On the other hand, “All it Takes for Your Dreams to Come True”, makes me think along the lines of Coheed and Cambria meets Dance Gavin Dance.
With this record, I find a sense of catchiness without the irratability of overcompensation. On the song “I’m not a Theif, I’m a Treasure Hunter”, there’s a hook that just makes you want to sing along before you’ve even learned the words, hoping somehow you’ll reach the vocal ability of Michael Jagmin. Alot of bands these days seem to lose their depth by trying to make a song with the purpose of getting on TRL instead of supplying something people will be passionate about. I’m really happy to see A Skylit Drive supply the goods!
“Wires…” combines definitive highs and lows, vivacious percussions, melodically intense vocals, pounding bass lines, the perfect dosage of key skills, and pulsating guitar riffs. This record goes beyond supplying applause worthy musicianship and thoughtful lyrics; it can take you somewhere mentally that rips you open and mends you back together again. “Wires…” is a thoroughly convincing display of what A Skylit Drive is capable of, and an excellent showcase of what’s to come from them in the future.

Good review, though based on the RIYLs, I doubt this is for me.
